The idea
Floating-first: mesa manages nothing on its own. It snaps windows into a handful of deliberate arrangements when you ask, and rearranges automatically for meetings.
Think one, two, many, plus one three-pane working shape at two widths, and an automatic meeting mode. Everything is app-agnostic, reflows with the number of windows, and adapts to whichever screen you’re on (laptop, desk, ultrawide).
Layouts
| Layout | What it does |
|---|---|
| focus | One app, centred |
| zen | The same, as a narrow centred column. Most of the screen goes back to wallpaper |
| split | Two panes; everything else folds into a stack behind the left one |
| meeting shape | The live meeting top-left, chat below, the focused app big on the right |
| control room | The same three panes, right pane widened for reading. Only the divider moves |
| grid | Every app in a balanced grid |
| meeting | Fires on a Zoom or Teams meeting or a Slack huddle, and reverts when the call ends |
A hint, not the truth
Split remembers a session so it can cycle windows through the stack, but the remembered session is a hint, not the truth. Every press re-resolves it against the live windows, so a stale session decays back into the plain split rather than getting stuck.
The cheatsheet renders from the same table that does the key binding, so it can’t go stale.
